Papervision - Augmented Reality
Using a webcam and flash, we’ve taken ‘Proto’ from the desktop to the desk. A new and exciting way to interact with your flash content. The possibilities are wide open.
Try it for yourself below:
- Make sure you download and print out our NEW symbol
- Allow flash access to your webcam below when it asks (or right click flash and select settings).
- Point your webcam at the printed symbol, ‘Proto’ will appear on top.
.
Papervision - Augmented Reality (extended) from Boffswana on Vimeo.
.
For those having trouble on the MAC, we’ve noted that you may need to manually select the camera in the flash settings by:
- right click on flash and select settings.
- select the webcam icon tab
- choose your camera from the drop down list (if your camera is an inbuilt one, it’s likely to be the firewire or USB version).
More on this exciting technology soon.

That is pretty fantastic guys. Great work.
I just tried it with a pretty old and not so good logitech webcam and it works, to a degree. The character can appear and disappear at random, even with bright light. I put it down to my bad camera.
May I suggest that the hiro ‘glyph’ shape be a little simpler, perhaps a symbol, maybe a star shape, with less fine detail - not lettering. This should help it work with lesser quality webcams and in lower light.
Just a thought, anyway, congratulations again for making this really accessible, easy to carry out using only a flash object! Just great!

Sorry for the delay (long weekend), but we’ve just updated the post to include the source code.
Thanks for all the positive feedback we’ve received.
For those having trouble on the MAC, we’ve noted that you may need to manually select the camera in the flash settings by:
1) right click on flash and select settings.
2) select the webcam icon tab
3) choose your camera from the drop down list (if your camera is an inbuilt one, it’s likely to be the firewire version).
Enjoy.

Hi,
A great example of flartoolkit in action!
Question: When compiling the source, where’s the Texture class defined? as in:
TextureMC = new Texture()
in SimpleModel.as
I’m compiling under Flex and don’t have a Texture class defined anywhere in the Flex SDK, Papervision or FLARToolkit library.
Thanks.

Guys, I know you’re sposed to release the source code under GPL, but that doesn’t mean everyone ‘would’. thank you, that was really awesome of you.
Flartoolkit is really awesome, but rather confusing to use, so it’s nice to have some extra source files to play with.
kudos and all the best to your talented team
November 25th, 2008
only issue though, is there’s a com and data folder. what does one do to gt this example running from the source files in either flash or flex? thanks
November 25th, 2008
@asd: The Texture() class is simply a linked library asset (extends movieclip) that is used as the texture.
I used Flash CS3 IDE, so simply (lazily) linked the library asset (texture image) as a class (extends movieclip).
You’ll find md2 files are generally accompanied by a texture in image format, I’ve simply dropped ours in a movieclip in the library. You could actually swap the MovieMaterial for a BitmapMaterial which you load in from a jpeg or similar.
@Gonzalo: You can use any .md2 file. You’ll find a link in the post to a quake model repository where you can download other md2 files.
@adam: the com folder contains the source files. You would use the SimpleModel example as the document class (I’m not sure what the equivalent is in Flex)
The Data folder contains some paramaters (settings files) that are required at runtime, so should live where the SWF gets generated.
November 25th, 2008

I´m having a strange error:
“1119: Access of possibly undefined property _projection through a reference with static type org.libspark.flartoolkit.pv3d:FLARCamera3D”
